I have juggled sporadically for about 15 years. Went on a big numbers mission in the first few years and was working pretty hard on seven and a bit of 8 - My progress was slow- got up to around 40 catches of 7 on a "lucky-ish" run. I was dropping way too much when I was practicing! I have started up again recently with much more success and after about 2 months of juggling for 30 mins a few times a week I now feel clear that I am not "trying" to learn to juggle 7, I am on the bus (and no longer feel like I am "herding cats"). I am focusing on a few basic aspects: spend double the time working on my weak side (especially my weaker side 4 ball shower- I used to do a 6-shower on my strong side, which may have added to an imbalance here).
* I started with just one ball, which I now do as my first warm up. When I focused on this, I became aware in how it felt different throwing from my right, compared with my left felt. i now warm up with this until both sides feel as similar as possible- I tend to be noticing this improving a little with each session I do (I do throws at height 7 with the one ball and then throw in a series of high throws, for kicks (think it helps improve release timing as well). I now do a lot of 4 ball showers on both sides, high 5 cascades and continuous flashes to height 7. Seems like as the flashes start getting comfortable and relaxed ( I am on the fringe of this), you can begin to get a feeling with 7 that you are flashing one set of 5 into the next and almost still feels like you are still doing the 5 flashes. This seems to feel a bit more relaxed, if you are used to the comfort of that feeling of continuous flashes from practicing them with 5- otherwise it can be a bit overwhelming when 7 just starts coming together - maybe its just my own excitement, because I worked too long and hard on it whilst practicing with less effective training technique (trying to continuously juggle 7 balls, before I could effectively control 1 at that height and timing in an efficient and relaxed manner. The more I practice like this, the more I am drawn to spend time on the simpler broken down aspects that fit into and are useful learning tools for the 7 cascade.
In terms of the difficulty of juggling compared with other top level athletes, I think we are all wired in a pretty similar manner, and the state of mind with which we take on challenges as well as our ability to find effective ways of taping into these capabilities play a far greater part than good genetic structure. Only ever seen about 3 different people juggling 7 in South Africa..

Trying to address your questions specifically:

"how common" -- Well, I'd say that those with a stable 7 ball cascade would be the 1/1000 range, but that includes *all* jugglers, including those that don't except to entertain their nephews so they don't cry. To put it another way, you'll very rarely see anyone do 7 solo on the street except in key towns where the standards are very high, and even then, only as a finale. Compare this to the proportionally small professional tour/performance/competition circuit, where 7 and 9 are not uncommon. A good measure of this is can be the reactions one gets in airports (especially flying internationally, as this minimizes locale bias): bust out a solid duration run of 5 balls [5-10 min each attempt] and compare that to your reaction when you do 3 or even 4. Then fire out tricks with 5, or some simple 6 ball stuff and watch folks stop in their tracks for a bit to watch. Try just flashing 7, and folks will get comfortable to watch for a while.

"how impressive (for jugglers)" -- 24 years ago when I taught myself to juggle, one almost never saw anyone attempting 5 [in performances, except rarely on tv]. Nowadays with the web and increased 'bandwidth', one can see vids of jugglers from almost anywhere on the planet, and thus have a better sampling, let alone encouragement to try "more". Today, it seems folks tend to class a 3 object juggler as 'good' {note: yes, there are folks who are astounding with their 3 object work, and I'm not going down the holy-war path here, just using the basic pattern and a few tricks as the guidline here}, a 4 object juggler as 'wow, that's pretty good', a 5 ball juggler as 'dang, that's really good', and 6 or 7 gets into the 'no way!' category. Of course, *jugglers* are more jaded to this sort of thing, and your average 'good' juggler has a reasonably stable 5 ball pattern now with dreams of getting a 7 ball qual run anytime they want. This makes a 7 ball cascade in the 'hey, that's really nice' category. Admittedly, there is the 'dedicated juggler' who actually juggles more than once a week and may even have a practice plan rather than merely social juggling, and they would concider 7 ball cascade a nice warmup.

For myself, I taught myself 5 balls during flight layovers when work sent me around the world to train the other sites. A few months after that, I started some more complicated tricks [...5555855525555... , ...555a5555055555... , and so on]. After a year of that, I started working on my 7 ball. Given I only go juggle twice a week, and much of that time is spent socializing, and/or passing clubs, and/or developing new tricks with the other instructor, and/or doing minutae planning for the juggling convention we are throwing{*}, I only get to work on 7 balls for about 10-15min a month. That said, I can typically get 12-24 catches.

Hope that address your origional questions. :) --Crizzly

what?

i would like some examples of who you think these "far better athletes" are. most jugglers i know ARE extremely quick minded people. frankly, i think that many quick minded people with unimaginable hand-eye coordination are pretty naturally drawn to juggling. and we already DO see amazing feats in juggling. i recommend taking some time off from your works and sleeps schedule and getting yourself to a juggling convention or festival. there you will meet some wonderful, quick, coordinated people who do amazing things. the top jugglers today train like athletes, if not harder.

oh, and on the big topic. i've got 44 catches with 7 balls and though i don't fancy myself a "top juggler," it makes me feel pretty damn good.

I recently moved into a house that has a juggling studio built in the back yard that has a 16 foot high ceiling. The previous owner, Tom Question (Yahner), built and learnt 7 balls in that very same studio. I am very new to juggling but everytime I step into that room I have this good feeling of what this studio once witnessed. Perhaps it will once again witness levels of accomplishments. So for me its not too uncommon to learn 7 or more balls.
