I see a Mr Babache juggling knife out there that I have never used so I'm not sure if even finding a good deal on them is worth it. Homeofpoi has them for about $28 each it looks like but is the product worth it?
summer we are planning a 4 week May-June tour from the east coast out to
Seattle in our veggie bus. One of our stops is San Francisco.

I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding venues that would be interested in booking a small circus show, or bands that would be interested in sharing a show (we do a lot of work with bands in western Mass, so we have a lot of experience with being general crowd winder-uppers and visual entertainment). We would be pretty adaptable but the place would need a semi-legit stage (not just a foot and a half thing in the corner of a bar).
Our website is: http://circusfolkunite.googlepages.com/crisscrosscircus

Hey Jugglers!
Come to a juggle jam at the Hayworth theatre Ballroom on March 4, 8pm.

What is it?: For those of you who have never done a jam before, it is where all jugglers involved stand in a circle while music is playing and each person holds two balls while the third ball gets passed throughout the group creating a series of 3 ball solos (though you can be ready with more balls if you prefer). It is a great way to exchange new tricks and styles with other jugglers in your community and my personal favorite way of juggling with others. This will be the first event of a monthly jam to take place at the Hayworth ballroom. Please invite anyone you may think would enjoy it. It is for jugglers of all levels.

Where is it? : The Hayworth Theatre is located in Los Angeles at 2511 Wilshire Blvd. between Coronado and Corondelet Streets just east of LaFayette Park. There is usually plenty of street parking as well as a parking lot near by that costs 5 dollars. The ballroom is upstairs at the end of the hall. The link to the website is : http://www.thehayworth.com/

Things to bring: Bring your DX balls and be sure before you add them in the mix, there is a way of knowing they are yours. Also bring glow balls if you have them, we may end up getting jiggy with the lights off. If you have music you particularly like to juggle to, please bring it on a CD. There will be a mix made of all the different music people like juggling to before we begin the jam.

More Details: The jam will last approx. an hour and we will need to be out of the ballroom by 10pm.
Please RSVP so I have an idea of how many people to expect, and don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions: lindsay@lindsaybenner.com.

This is a warning about a magic/juggling store that tries to screw over their customers! Please do not do business with this company: Dr. Bob's Magic Shop.

I dropped my 4" and scratched it up pretty bad. I was talking to my mom on the phone after it happened and told her about it and she felt it necessary to buy me a new one and have it shipped to me. She paid for the higher quality ball, not one of the "factory seconds" that they offer."

When I recieved the ball a couple days latter, what I found was a ball in poor condition, one I would assume to be a "factory second." There were quite a few swirl marks from when the ball was made, there were numerous and very visible blemishes and bubles inside of the ball. I called my mom to let her know this since she was the one paying for the ball. She called Bob and he said that we had actually ordered a "factory second" and that's what we got.

That's when I stepped in. I had the sales invoice that he had included with the ball, the price on that invoice was for a higher quality ball, not a "factory second" which was over $15 cheaper than what my mom paid for.

At that time he said that I could return the ball and he would exchange it for a better quality ball. So I did.

Now, keep in mind that the only time I touched this ball was the first day I got it and that was just to take it out of the box, unwrap it from the cellophane, notice the poor quality of the ball, wrap it back up and place it back in the box. I taped the box back up and sent it to Bob. Today I got an e-mail it reads:

"Hello again David,

We received the ball back yesterday.

Have a little problem with the return

The ball received has been used extensively, and dropped.

We NEVER will allow a ball to leave in the condition this was returned
in. Factory seconds are buffed
to determine the exact reason we reject the ball as a "second" - and
new balls are all inspected before they are shipped - to locate the
possible flaws in the shipments received.

We will buff this ball for you - and return it to you.

Customer Service"

My Reply:

"That ball was never once used. I unwrapped it from the cellophane the day I got it, saw the flaws instantly, wrapped it back up and put it in the box and didn't touch it again. I will not except a ball in that kind of condition when I paid for one that was of higher quality! I have done business with your shop three times, the first two transactions were flawless and because of that I have defended your company when others from the juggling community have had issues with your services and have refered numerous people, both jugglers and those looking to start juggling to your store. If I recieve the same ball that I sent back to you, I will take my business elsewhere and make sure to tell everyone else to do the same. On top of that, I still have the receipet, sent by you, showing that the ball I was supposed to receive was of a higher quality and if needed will you that to take legal action to ensure that I either 1) get my money back or 2) get a ball of the quality I originally purchased.

David"

Now, going to the website I see that it says that 4" balls(not the factory seconds) are out of stock. It seems to me that he's got himself in a bind and is trying to get out of a jam by accusing me of messing up the ball. I'm not only frustrated, I'm pissed off about this. 1) Because Dr. Bob is trying to scam the s**t out of me and 2) Because here is a business that I defended and refered people to and now they're screwing me over!

I was e-mailed merely moments later with this:

“Look Kid

I do not react well to threats

You tried to pull a fast switch and got caught

And no other people have had issues with our service - so don't try to

bluff your way thru this

I know what we send - and we never sent the ball out in the condition
received back”

Is this the sign of a professional business? No. Whatever you do, DO NOT do business with this company.

Calling all freaks! Actors, dancers, aerialists, contortionists, jugglers, acrobats, puppeteers, hula-hoopers, stilt walkers, acrobalancers, object manipulators, sideshow spectacles -- if you have a talent and a desire to perform, we want to see it!

The Madcap Rumpus Society is holding auditions for our spring show, to be performed in late April or May of 2008. The exuberant and talented Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band ( www.myspace.com/ensmb ), a twelve-piece circus band gaining notoriety on the Greater Boston scene, will accompany us. The profits from the show, which come from a weekend run of 2-3 performances, will provide compensation to be shared among the cast and crew, as well as help to build a foundation for future productions.

We are looking for soloists & groups to create acts to fit into our show's framework, as well as ensemble members to work intensively as a group to create that framework. All performers should be able to work both independently and cooperatively with other artists and under the supervision of the show’s creative directors. Ensemble members will rehearse twice a month until March/April, when rehearsals will be held more frequently.

We are particularly seeking dancers, actors, and other theatrical & physical performers. Regardless of whether you have circus experience, if this project sounds interesting to you, we encourage you to audition.

Auditions will be held on Dec. 1 and 2. Email ringmaster@ensmb.com to schedule an appointment, or to find out more. Please bring a 3-5 minute piece demonstrating your technical and creative talents, as well as resumes, description of performance experience or artist’s statements if you have them.
If I am sad, I am happy after juggling, even if I couldn't manage to pull off that new trick.
If I am feeling good, I end up even more so.
Lately I have been sick and when I juggle, during and for a while after I hardly even notice what was a miserable feeling.

So my question is two-fold, more discussion topic really.
#1) Does anyone else feel like this?
and #2) Does anyone have any theories (or even science facts) as to why this is?

Hey gang.

It is with great pride and satisfaction that I announce the actual, irreversible Grand Opening of our new circus arts center, THE HIPPODROME, in Portland OR.

In Summary: I'm doing the Grand Opening show November 17th. Starting that day, we'll have the space open during all days and some nights for classes, rehearsals, and performances. And we need the help of our amazing tech people to set up as much top-notch apparatus as we can squeeze in there, starting around October 20th.

If you've got a taste for details, read on.

What Creature and I have put together is a deal for a full-fledged circus venue, owned by my employer Mike Wolfson, housed in what was once the main room of the BComplex/MeowMeow/Loveland/Mercury Room/Euphoria. It's a 1000-capacity all-ages venue with a big stage, big PA system, 2o-foot ceiling, and big sexy exposed beams. This means that not only are we managing to avoid paying tens of thousands of dollars in renovation, insurance, and monthly rent; we are in fact pulling a salary to run the place. I'm the booker and Creature is the production manager.

So. There are a number of things we need to do to prepare:

I've got the Grand Opening scheduled for November 17th, with Batty's Hippodrome doing an 8-10:30 show and PURE Cirkus doing a much darker 11-12:30 show. Then I want to get a DJ in there (very likely Gypsy Sound System and Global Ruckus, who will already be playing next door).

The room will become available for all our nefarious plans circa October 20th. That means we'll have just under one month to set up whatever circus apparatus we want in the room for all our rehearsals, workshops, and performances. We have highly qualified friends who have offered to install first-rate professional aerial rigs, trapeze, and other hard-to-find trappings of the big top; though exactly what we'll have available when will be dictated both by constraints of time and budget.

Then, starting November 17th, the room will be available in the daytime and some evenings for rehearsals, classes, meetings, and performances. Creature will spearhead this operation in the same way I'll spearhead the show side of things, though both of us will surely be entangled in all of it. If you or anyone you know is looking for a place to practice/teach/study things like: aerial, juggling, fire spinning, dance, yoga, martial arts, tumbling, clowning, theater, or any other specialized skill within the broad definition of Circus; please let us know and we can find you a spot on the schedule.

Please do let me know if you can get in on this in any capacity. I'm sure we'll also need people to come and help us clean/build/decorate the place during that crucial 10/20 - 11/17 period as well, so even your totally unskilled friend can get in on the fun.
Get The Shoe stole the show- from the likes of Viktor Kee, Francoise Rochet, and Peapot! It was amazing, you could feel the audience waiting to jump out of their seats the energy level was so high.

Romantasy Cabaret, a hilarious, theatrical, adult-fun production will debut June 30 2007 at Phoenix’ own Paper Heart Gallery at 750 NW Grand Avenue. The doors open at 7pm and the show begins at 8pm.
This unusual production will feature crass carnies, dancing dames, burlesque babes, saucy songstresses and fabulous freaks.
With circus acts and burlesque shows making a comeback in modern day, this show is sure to hearken back to an age where buskers and tramps earned their living by performing odd or sexy acts for higher society.

We're looking for individual performers and troupes to perform at Maria Hernandez park after a parade through Bushwick on Saturday June 2nd. We are also accepting any and all types of performers for different venues throughout the weekend. Register at ArtsInBushwick.org or email performance@artsinbushwick.org.

Artists and residents of Bushwick are creating the Bushwick Open Studios & Arts Festival to bring to light the hidden aspects of Bushwick.

Breaking with the past and taking inspiration from the self-organizing structure of Web 2.0, the event and its planning is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Currently, more than 80 artists and community members are involved in planning and producing the event. The festival is an open and inclusive event that benefits the entire community by sharing artistic projects and encouraging community interaction and dialogue.

Walking or driving through the industrial area of Bushwick, you might miss the hundreds of artists working in the area’s lofts. The Bushwick Summer Arts Festival brings these artists and performers out into the streets and into view of each other, other community residents, and the general public. The community organizers hope to inspire a diverse group of participants, such as local high school students, car art painters, and a variety of musical groups, to share their work in an open, welcoming and inclusive forum. Organizers are working with local businesses, nonprofits, and arts organizations, which may provide venues, create events, or offer funding. Some volunteers are planning interarocess itself. The June 07 event will be amazing, but equally important is what’s happening right now. By coming together to plan a creative event, people are connecting and collaborating, thereby strengthening our community.”

Artists and organizers are available to talk about their plans and process.

Last year, more than 120 artists participated and hundreds more community residents and others attended the event. This year the organizers expect even more participants. New activities this year will include more performances, more outdoor events, and a series of facilitated discussions and panels. The panels will focus on the past, present, and future of the Bushwick community, the role of the arts in Bushwick and other neighborhoods in New York City, and the question of gentrification and sustainability in our community.

The festival is organized by a group of volunteers under the name Arts in Bushwick, and in cooperation with other area nonprofits and businesses. This is the third Bushwick Open Studios event since 2005, but the first to be organized by Arts in Bushwick.

Register at ArtsinBushwick.org

Ok, all you feisty firey folks, this is it! The official “we’re having a conclave, now what do we do?” meeting. Everyone’s invited to co-create the magic we’ll spin on the playa this year...we need fire dancers, safety people, drummers, photographers, videographers, adoring fans...

Mark your calendars: Sunday, March 4th at noon at the Watershed, 5040 SE Milwaukie

Why would you come all the way to Portland that weekend? Glad you asked! There are no fewer than 3 other major events happening here that weekend that would make anybody travel to our fair, wet city…

Aphelion, a borg (work) party (March 3, 5p- wee hours of the morning)
March 4th’s anniversary shows (March 4, 3:30 all ages & 8:30 21+)
Community Fire and Drum Jam (March 4, 8/8:30- ???)
as well as the usual Dante’s Sinferno and, of course, the Conclave Meeting!

What more could you ask for?

How about a space dedicated to collaborative work that actually wants large bands of crazy fire performers hanging out & doing their thing?

Sound good? Then make your way to Aphelion (3/3/07) at the new Watershed building to meet up with Burning Man theme camps and conclaves, other projects, groups and businesses, and anyone else who shows up to “fly their banner.” This is also a party, complete with dj’s, dancing, merriment and madness. Oh yeah, and alcohol. And lots of cool people from Seattle and other parts of the West Coast. And fire. Oh, yeah!

This affects us as the Oregon Conclave because this space, and the 30’ wide dead end street it sits on, have been offered to us for Conclave meetings and rehearsals in exchange for participation from the community. Our part at Aphelion is to discuss fire at the new building, and begin planning on how we want to handle the fire department in relation to this building.

It's Aphelion from Burning Man, exactly 6 months till the burn.
http://tribes.tribe.net/watershedpdx

If you are interested in learning more about the conclave, please come to the meeting. Whether you can come to the meeting or not, please get in touch by phone or by email to let us know we should keep you in the loop.

You can also join the Oregon Conclave Tribe to keep up with and contribute to planning, or to post photos or video links related to the Conclave.
http://tribes.tribe.net/oregonconclave

See you soon!

A collective creation from one of the most exciting new circus theatre companies in the world, TRACES offers an ethereal, surreal and unreal multi-media contemporary circus experience. TRACES combines stunning acrobatics with an urban hip-hop flavor, all imbued with a poetic reflection on memory and survival. Directed and choreographed by ‘7Fingers’ founding members and Pickle Circus alumni Gypsy Snider and Shana Carroll, TRACES is performed by five talented young actor-acrobats fresh out of Montreal’s École Nationale de Cirque, most of whom received their early circus training from Master Lu Yi at Circus Center.

The clock is ticking - a countdown towards an unknown fate. The performers are thrown straight from a whirlwind catastrophe onto a stage that feels like a junkyard. Anticipating the worst, they’ve cobbled together a makeshift shelter, with an eclectic array of useful items: a piano and classical music scores, a basketball, skateboards, a well-thumbed book, an armchair, and two tall poles for holding up the world—and for climbing, five at a time. TRACES is performed by Héloïse Bourgeois, Francisco Cruz, Raphael
Cruz, Brad Henderson and Will Underwood, who combine high-level circus skills with a jet-fueled urban street energy—soaring, somersaulting, contorting, balancing and catapulting as they move from one skill to another, using anything and everything that comes to hand.

Since forming in 2002, ‘7Fingers’ (in Montreal, Les 7 Doigts de la Main) has taken the world by storm with its disarmingly eccentric and intelligent re-interpretation of circus theatre. Bay Area audiences and critics raved about the company’s first production "7Fingers," Circus Center’s 2003 Holiday Show. TRACES extends ‘7Fingers’ unique and engaging concept of a new, accessible circus where astonishing acrobatic feats illustrate much more than physical prowess: they’re poetry expressed in gestures, ideas translated into movement.

The U.S. premiere of TRACES arrives in San Francisco on the heels of performances at several prestigious venues around the world. The show just completed sold-out runs in Berlin at the famed Chameleon Cabaret, and in Melbourne, Australia. Prior to opening at the Palace of Fine Arts, the show will have a month-long run in Montreal at recently opened circus venue, Tohu.

Performances of TRACES are at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater, 3301 Lyon Street, San Francisco.
Second seems that you could just surprise them by doing some simple stuff and the pulling out a Big Old, bad-ass complex move. From there you can brake the move down into basic moves for the same reason as above or you can just try and keep them off balance by repeating with other moves.

Just a reminder that I have produced materials such as T-shirts, caps, buttons, and other items with the PSPA logo on them. The PSPA is a way to identify yourself as a professional street performer. Interestingly enough, the bulk of the sales I get are from Europe, not the U.S. People tend to order the T-shirts and caps mostly. I began doing this as a way of boosting my own profile as a professional busker, since I wanted to make clear that I'm not a bum, homeless, etc. Unfortunately, tourists who aren't very worldly don't understand busking. This logo idea is a way to help change the image of busking.

Here's the website: www.cafepress.com/pspa

Feel free to use the logo on your own materials if you'd like. Though I maintain all rights to the logo, I am offering it for your use as a street performer.
